First-timer, subbed

I have zero idea what I’m getting into other than it being made by the same peeps who did Clannad. So this should be fun.

  • Ooh I loved whatever song that was used during the opening scene. I love music boxes.

  • Mm, the OP is a beautiful song too. TV size sounded like it cut off pretty abruptly though, I’ll have to give the full version a listen at some point.

  • …Okay the scene about the dream was… interesting. I look forward to learning what it means.

  • Hahaha. Also I think the uniform looks cute, smh at Yuuichi for calling it weird.

  • Ah I see, so Akiko is Yuuichi’s aunt and Nayuki is his cousin.

  • Okay so a lot of the character designs are pretty similar to Clannad’s but that boy--Kitagawa? looks more or less just like Sunohara with an ahoge and a different eye color. Yuuichi even immediately started messing with him just like Tomoya always messed with Sunohara!

  • <3, so cute~

  • This girl is also very cute.

  • Hahahahahahahahahaha.

  • I see Nayuki collects alarm clocks of all things?

  • Ooh, flashback dream thing to the conversation that Nayuki recalled before she went into the store. And Yuuichi met Ayu back then as well, huh.

  • ED was alright.

  • I’m sure there’ll be some rewatchers who do this, but I counted… 15 “Uguu~”s (including one in the little flashback to when Ayu ran off without paying for her food that the subs didn’t sub) this episode. 16 if you count the one Yuuichi did to mimic her.

All in all, solid opening episode! I’m looking forward to the next one.

IRON-BLOODED REWAT-(ohwaitwrongthread)

ahem

WINTER REWATCHER

Before I start, let me tell you a story.

Back then, during my highschool days, I've only been interested in watching shounen and mecha anime. Apart from a couple of childhood anime (Cardcaptor Sakura, Super Gals!, Ouran High School Host Club) I didn't have any interest in watching other genres. That changed when I entered college in 2010. During summer of 2010, I made new friends who were also into anime. When they knew I only watch shounen and mecha, they suggested that I should try watching other genres too, to broaden my tastes. When I was browsing what should I watch, I stumbled upon Kanon 2006. I decided to pick it up, and after watching it, I was changed. The sheer emotions I've felt thoughout when I watched it, and the way the story presents itself, and how the characters play their roles, left a very strong impression in my mind. I then opened up, and this led me to widen my horizons of anime genres. To this day, I hold Kanon very dear to my heart, and I rewatch it during winter whenever I can have free time.

This now makes the seventh time I've watched the series. Last rewatch, I watched the English dub, and it's pretty good imo. This time though, I'll go back to watching the sub.

Thoughts for Today's Episode:

  1. I LOVE THE OP. It really sets you to the winter setting of the anime, and it's really nice to listen to during cold days.

  2. This is the series that intoduced me to the awesome VA Tomokazu Sugita. He's one of my favorite male VAs,and his role as Yuuichi is very well-done.

  3. The first episode introuces us to Aizawa Yuuichi who, due to busy parents, has moved to his aunt's place for the time being and will be studying there along with his cousin Nayuki. It's a pretty basic premise, but then we add the fact that Yuuichi can't recall much of the times he spent there seven years ago. It may be that seven years is a long time, and he was a kid at that time, but as we'll go on to the series,we'll also see,in flashback, the events that happened that time.

Whoa there, Yuuichi, careful! You’re a married man!

And would you look at this – a rare KeyAni onscreen kiss! Sure, it’s on the cheek, but I’m counting it! Because of the weird-ass way I structured the bingo card, this has given us an anti-bingo square: the “No kissing allowed” square will forever remain unticked, because unlike in Clannad, here kissing is permitted.

While Shiori may be the one who’s dying, I ask for a moment of silence for her classmate, who never even got a name. Her voice actress does… uhh… eyepatch girl from Little Busters, I guess. That’s rough.

Musical Episode Titles #18: Disappearing Adagio

As far as I can remember, this is the first term we’ve had that’s more of a tempo marker than a name for a type of piece, though there are some pieces that use it as their title, like Adagio in G Minor. Adagio means “at ease”, and as you might expect, it’s used to indicate that the piece should be played slowly. So, fittingly enough, the title of this episode is more-or-less “slowly disappearing”, just like Shiori.

First-timer:

Man, I'm glad they feel the same way. Nayuki I think picked up on it and is bothered, though. Like Yuuichi noted, it's strange for her to be up before him with no problem.

I have the feeling that Ayu's school isn't real. Like maybe she's a missing child or an orphan, or a spirit that hasn't been able to move on. There's just too much about her that's a mystery still for her to be normal.

Akiko knows something, and it's probably not good. The tree I'm guessing is Yuuichi-Ayu's tree, and maybe Ayu's school was built on that (if it's real).

They're going to Ayu's school...and it is where the tree was. Ayu becomes aware of the falsehood and panics.

So when Akiko mentioned the "and" and it left the flashback to that morning, I'm wondering if the "and" was that a girl died.

If spirits can materialize and interact with others like Makoto did, it wouldn't surprise me if Ayu was waiting for Yuuichi for seven years. That's why she looks like she's much younger than Yuuichi. She's been dead and waiting for him.

I don't know why she disappeared, though. My guess is she moved on, and that Yuuichi needs to find the lost item for her to come back.

I'm already excited for tomorrow. I really want to see how this all ends.

Study of contact, hmm? I wonder if this is reference in some way to Nayuki, who has practiced a difficult skill and achieved excellence, yet is unable to make contact with Yuuichi in the way she wants.

Flashback scene, fine, wait, what's that big tree? #clannadFlashbackIntensifies Wait wait WAIT, the sky is all red and she's climbing up it way too high...now I'm remembering the first few eps...okay officially don't like where this must be going.

And then The Kiss. This is the thing I was accidentally spoiled on the other day. I was kinda into it then, but today seeing it in context, whoa, moving on from Shiori a bit fast there, buddy.

First Timer (Dub)

Nothing can replace the hole in my heart for Makoto, she held #1 girl for 2 episodes, may her spirit live on - at least Piro is back though.

The dialog interactions this episode are on point. The antics Yuuichi gets up to with Mai and Sayori and then the conversation between him and Nayuki were gold.

How old is Ayu exactly? - cause I'm having conflicting thoughts about her when she doesn't have her coat on...

Next episode looks like some sort of dance. I feel like I may have seen an excerpt of it before somewhere - time for context!

First Timer

Okay, I have been posting at all, because the beginning of the rewatcch snuck up on me and I have been busy with other stuff. Still, I've been liking this so far, if not as much as Clannad. I like that we have Yukari Tamura in here and Sugita is also fun here. I can see how this show is viewed as a spiritual predecessor to Clannad. So, we are getting far more supernatural here with a baby fox that became a human out of love for the one that saved it. (Also I can't help but see Makato as an Asuka reference.) This show has definitely won over my interest when I was already curious about it, both from watching Clannad and from several doujins I have seen with Akiko. I will try to be more active going forward.

Alright so I haven't been following the rewatch week to week but I recently caught up on the show and am at ep 13 now.

And unfortunately I have to say that I'm gonna have to drop this show. You see once I choose to watch something I generally always try to follow it to the end whether I like it or not to get a full view of the show so I can properly form my opinion on it.

I tried with Kanon but I just can't seem to get into it or see the appeal at all. The characters are so bland and one dimensional, the humor is obvious and lame , the themes are shallow as could be and none of the emotions ever feel earned or genuie. It's probably just not for me but yeah I think I shoukd drop it.

Just curious with all I said does anyone feel I should still give it a shot and watch till the end or should I just move on.

Rewatch into the second episode!

  • Nayuki prepared that alarm clock specially for him huh. There is no way how only one alarm clock has her voice, unless she wakes only to her own voice. That would be especially creepy.

  • I want to visit this school though. The campus is big enough for you to not leave the building even after turning rounds around it. Either Yuuichi has no sense of direction, or the school building is large.

  • Ayu again. And without her wallet. She can be a very good robber with her skills. Twice in a row she succeeded in getting her taiyaki free. And being dumb, she got herself lost together with no-direction Yuuichi.

  • Heh. Rewatching this made me realise, Ayu is the same age as Yuuichi. And her going on and on about a romantic reunion with Yuuichi, I don't think she is supposed to be a kid at all. But then again, she acts so dumb and awkward all the time, she probably can be Nayuki's little sister and no one would suspect anything.

  • Oh, and my most favourite Kanon character makes her appearance.

Rewatcher

Wow, it's been a long time since I've seen this one. Kanon was one of the first 10 anime I ever watched. After I fell in love with Clannad and searched for similar series, it was only natural that Kanon would follow. I recall enjoying it at the time, but it was also at a time where I wasn't great at picking up on things or understanding what I was watching, and it didn't stand out in the same way as other early favorites like Clannad and YLiA did, so the series as a whole is largely a blur for me. So I'm excited to revisit it now. Kanon isn't talked about often, largely overshadowed by it's successor, and I'm excited to see how it stacks up now that I'm a more experienced viewer. As a Kyoani fan, where does Kanon stand among their body of work, should be a good time.

Alright, that was pretty interesting, for a few reasons. This episode had its ups and downs, but I'd say that I enjoyed it overall. The biggest draw of this for me so far is it's atmosphere. I was surprised at just how moody a lot of this was and I think it handled it really well. It has this melancholic, nostalgic feel to it that I adore, there's something sort of ethereal about it. A lot of it has to do with the fact that the show is really pretty (well, it is Kyoani). The blend of blues and oranges alongside the white, snow-covered streets and buildings makes this vibe feel palpable, and it fits perfectly with this moody story of nostalgia and memories. Honestly, this strength alone is probably enough for me to largely enjoy this show so long as it doesn't drag or get repetitive, the particular mood that Kanon revels in is one I've always found to be really nice and even during the worst parts of the episode I found myself enjoying this mood.

The other thing I like is how it introduces the characters. The dialogue, particularly in the first half, was really strong. Yuuichi's and Nayuki's initial meetings feel like real conversations people might have while organically showing us the characters personalities and introducing us to their hobbies and situations. Yuuichi can talk about how little he remembers the town and Nayuki can explain that she's on the track team without it ever dragging down the pace. I was pretty impressed by it actually. If you're going to tell and not show, this is the way to do it.

My biggest problem with the episode came from Yuuichi and Ayu. They feel pretty shallow so far. While Clannad's iconic opening scene alone revealed a ton about Tomoya and Nagisa and made them out to be relatable and sympathetic characters, this entire episode basically just managed to show us that Yuuichi doesn't remember much about his childhood in this town and that he's kind of a troll. Not much to really get attached to, I can't say that I find "slowly remembering my childhood" to be a set of traits that invests me, I don't know or care about Yuuichi yet, let alone his past. I remember Ayu being a lot more endearing the last time, but that honestly might be because I was unfamiliar with anime tropes at the time. Here, she feels like a distillation of what a cute anime girl looked and acted like in the mid-2000's, without any real distinguishing personality traits of her own. She's an idiot, she's childish, and she says Uguu because that's what's cute. And part of it might also be that the series comedic timing isn't particularly strong. Yuuichi's trolliness and Ayu's weirdness didn't feel very endearing since the jokes that are supposed to make them so don't land as they should. Thankfully though, I did find Nayuki to be a more fleshed out and endearing character.

Aesthetically, Kanon is certainly a product of it's time. While it's color design and background art is legitimately beautifully, those faces really hold it back. It's not so much that they look ugly (though they do), but they look lifeless. Despite it's other issues, Air had some really expressive character animation particularly of their bodies, and Clannad's faces felt like they emoted a lot despite the dinner plate eyes. Kanon's eyes don't really feel like that. I think it's something about the pupils not being well-defined, but the facial animations don't work well and the series focuses a lot more on their faces than their bodies. For a show that's largely focused on the ways characters react to things they remember (and also cry sometimes), there's an issue if their expressions fail to convey those feelings well. That's usually what Kyoani is best at though, so I expect (and hope) that they get used to the character designs and figure our ways to make them more expressive.

But overall, I had a solid time. If we can get more of that atmosphere, flesh out the characters some more, and maybe bring some more consistent character and facial animation, I can see myself enjoying the series again and it living up to my memories of it. I guess I'll have to go on the same journey as Yuuichi to really remember my experience with it the last time and compare.

Wow! Can't believe one of my favorites finally have a rewatch in this sub. I'm a big kanon fan that i've watch it live when it's airing 2006 also watch kanon 2002 and kanon kazehana when i was a teenager. After i watch 2006 every december i watch it for 5 yrs like a ritual thing. Such nostalgia i guess it's time to rewatch it again with you guys. Personally for me i love makoto's arc in 2002 than 2006 because it was a tear jerker! Is there a rewatch of 2002 and kazehana too? Although some people will get turn off because of the animation and character looks since its back in 2002 but for me i don't mind it because of the story. That's how i love kanon as much.

I know im late but im watching for the first time, it's pretty refreshing watching an older anime, i miss the little translators notes explaining things about Japanese culture (although I need them less now than I used to)

I love the way MC makes fun of the uguu's a lot of anime tropes are just accepted in anime so its funny to see someone call it out.

I like the winter setting from the comments in the original post it seems like theres a lot of snow crunching which is nice.

It can be a shift watching older anime with a completely different style than modern anime but I've been acclimating myself to it and the more I do the more I think its an aquired taste like alcohol.

So far I think the Nayuki is a little vapid for my tastes, I hope she gets more backbone, Yuiichi is a good mix of sarcastic and kind but thats a tried and true formula for 99% of MC's, Ayu is my particular brand of adorable and the two other characters we meet seem memorable and fun too. So if any complaints I would say Nayuki is a little too wispy of a character for me. But who knows what'll happen in the future.

I look forward to episode 2!
