I love the overall direction 1999 takes, especially with their great “show don't tell” directing, giving us great characterization that shows off the characters in a more natural way. I've always seen the first episode of 2011 like a Pokemon game where the mother sends her child off into the world without too much thought while 1999 is a more “realistic” approach.

One of the biggest differences in the episode compared to 2011 was the introduction of Kite, the first actual Hunter we see who is cemented as that reasonable guy who Gon looks up to for the amount of time we saw him.

Mito definitely feels like more of an actual character than in 2011 especially when the episode ends and we see her opening the door only to remember that Gon left for his adventure.

Overall the tone and atmosphere fit this episode very well, feeling very calm in a sense.

This episode is amazingly well done. Showing Kite arriving to wale island to find info for Ging, saving gon, gon burying the mother and searching flowers for the tomb with kite while Kite explains him what a hunter is and how his father alive and one of the best, putting him in the mission of searching for him and also showing bits of gon trying to be friends with Kon through the chapter.

Mito's character gets more depth too, showing how she cares about Gon and thinks of him as his own child through the character, which makes you understand more why she doesn't want him to leave to the point of lying to him so he doesn't go on his search. The selfishness of both characters is strong in this one.

Also having gon practicing to catch the fist and saying that the fishing rod is from his father is also a nice one also as you can take the implication of the rod being that absurdly strong because the nen of ging and that gon is not a super child who caught the fist in the first try. And oh yeah, the sequence of gon catching the fish is very well done.

I'll let here a little collage i did with some images (i'll try to do them better) and the webm of gon catching the fish, the art of this show is so good, specially the backgrounds.

OSU!

Good episode. Nen is something hunter x hunter does very well, and although it's only just started here, it'll go on to become very interesting in the later arcs.

Now we begin the series proper. Don’t know if I’ll be able to stay along for the entirety of the Rewatch, as I am involved in a few others that take precedence, but I will stick around for as long as I can.

Man, I’d forgotten just how much I love Ohayou as an OP.

This episode is a really strong start to the series, deftly characterizing the main character through both exposition and his own actions —building up the motivations and displaying characteristics which will define Gon’s future actions. The atmosphere and tone are also on point for the episode’s subject matter, with a befitting OST and wonderful visuals which I will undoubtedly continue to praise as the series goes on —this show most evidently had a lot of talented staff working on it.

Kite leaves a strong impression as a notable character despite his prompt departure, playing a fatherly or mentorly role to Gon, and leaves an equally if not greater impression on the young boy.

Mito’s character was handled pretty well, her concern and affection for Gon coming off as genuine even in such short a time. I also liked how her teachings from the beginning of the episode —her insistence that Gon keep his promises and not lying— are brought up again later on in the episode when she is forced to let Gon go and admits to having lied about Ging having abandoned Gon. Her small arc is effective in spite of its brevity and she ends up feeling a cohesive character.

I watched the 2011 version of HxH in 2017, and seeing this rewatch i decided to give the 1999 version a try. Especially since i knew the first episode introduced Kite, something the 2011 version left out.

It was a nice start, and i like how it's much more melancolyc. The 2011 sells itself much more on the idea of a grand adventure, while here the show seems much more focused on the characters and their emotions. Something that fits well with the art style and the color palet.

All in all, a nice first episode. I don't know if i will be able to see this rewatch to the end, but i will stick around as much as i can.

I really miss the animation from the pilot, but we had a nice 2s background-animation pan around Gon's father.

I enjoyed last episode's filler, was fun. We also saw a sneaky preview of Kurapika.

I don't remember watching this episode so it was like watching it again for the first time. I was reading the comments on youtube and someone said it was like a movie, and I agree. If all fillers were like this, I don't think anyone would mind them so much.

Also, I was going to say Hisoka and that guy (I don't think he's been named yet and I don't want to spoil anyone) weren't lifting a finger at all and everyone was just okay with it -- but then, that ending happened. I got chills! Sorry for gushing. I just remembered why me and my and bro watched this religiously years ago. HxH will never not be awesome!

Yesterday made two years since I started watching HxH 2011 thanks to a /r/anime rewatch, time to do the same with the original as well!

I already watched this first episode back then since it got recommended thanks to properly introducing Kite, and man that's a great start, I really like Gon's interactions with her aunt and how emotional it makes his departure despite being just an episode. This is the start of one hell of an adventure!

I love getting a more substantive backstory for Leorio. I loved his character from the 2011 adaptation, but it's nice to get some more emotional depth from him early on. I'd read that this version makes him out to be a more capable than he was in the more recent adaptation, so I'm excited to see more new moments involving him as the rewatch continues

First timer for 1999, I watched 2011. I guess I'll just compare the two.

I definitely didn't remember the 2011 version focusing on the photo of Ging or introducing Kite. It definitely sets the expectation Gon's journey being for the purpose of finding Ging spoilers for 1999 which I know I think when I watched the beginning of the 2011 version, I got the feeling the quest was to become a hunter and Gon didn't really care about finding Ging.

I definitely liked Departure better than the 1999 OP. Maybe the OP will grow on me, we'll see. Departure is so full of hope and adventure, and I think that perfectly fits the mood, especially for the first arc. 2011 OP later in the series

One thing that was offputting about 2011 was the smoothness of everything. As with the OP, it gave everything a cheery, "nothing will ever go wrong" feel. So far, I'm enjoying the grittiness of the 1999 animation. It felt like the right amount of dirtiness when Kite killed the foxbear thing. The animation made it feel nostalgic too, which matches a departure arc, though I'm sure that wasn't intended at the time.

I'm enjoying not having the narrator's voice over everything, though in 2011 he definitely makes some scenes into what they are such as, though I'm not sure if the narrator was too active in the beginning anyway.

I definitely felt Leorio wasn't fleshed out enough in the 2011 adaptation, but that's also why I loved his development later in the series, because my first contact with HxH was through the 1999 one.

In a post 2011 world, I'm glad the original still gets recognition. It's the only version I've seen, but I thought it was excellent. (Planning on watching 2011 once the dub finishes airing)

So this arc is the one arc I found to absolutely trump the 2011 version. The atmosphere is great, and the animation and music work well for the Yorkshin setting imo. Also important to note is that this arc is longer in the 1999 version and has some pretty important moments that the 2011 version didn't include. However this is just my opinion, and there are a ton of people who have also watched both and prefer the 2011 version.
